The Driver

“Remember, you will be the same person in five years as you are today except for two things: the people you meet and the books you read. Choose both carefully.” ― Charlie “Tremendous” Jones

Every time I stepped into my home office I was being MOCKED.  They INSULTED me each time I entered the room.  They called me a SLACKER.  They told me my life was UNFOCUSED.  They reminded me of all the GOALS I never accomplished.

They told me they would reveal the SECRETS of the world.  They promised to make my life BETTER.  They claimed they would lead me to FINANCIAL FREEDOM.  They could make me feel YOUNGER.  They could take my CAREER to the next level.  They would help me raise a REMARKABLE family.

I stopped listening to them.  I stopped looking at them.  Then I could no longer IGNORE them.  “They” were the dozens of unread books OVERFLOWING across my office shelves.

These books were bought with the best INTENTIONS.  I am avid non-fiction reader.  If you are a noted author of business, politics, sales, personal finance, or history – your work is sitting on my shelf.

THE PROBLEM:  The “UNREAD” section of my book shelf dwarfed the “READ” section.  Not good.  I considered giving up and giving them all away.  That would have been the easy way out.  That would have been a HUGE step towards an AVERAGE life.  It was time to break the trend.

Then I met ZIG ZIGLAR.  Zig told me (and the 8,500 other people sitting in the arena with me in Philadelphia) to “turn your car into a University.”  Zig told us to turn off the talk radio.  Trash the Top 40.  TRANSFORM our “Drive Time” to personal DEVELOPMENT time.

At first, I thought Old Zig was hitting the Old Grand Dad too hard back stage.  I never heard of this idea before.  I did not know anyone who did this.  But this IDEA was my main TAKE AWAY from this seminar and I decided to give it a TRY.

THE RESULT:  It blew me away.  My first audio book was  “Rogue Warrior”.   It is a book on business concepts learned in warfare by the founder of SEAL Team 6.  There were stories on how SEAL Team 6 took out terrorist cells and saved the world.  Awesome!

My dreaded 45 minute commute on I-76 in Philly VANISHED.  There were days I got mad when traffic was light and I got to work with out being able to finish a chapter.

THE OPPORTUNITY:  The average commute in the USA is approximately 30 minutes each way.  Do the math:

  • 1 hour each day.
  • 5 hours each week.
  • 20 hours each month.
  • 250 hours each year

For those of us who went to a state school, that is OVER 10 days per year in sitting your car.

THE QUESTION:  What could you ACCOMPLISH if you had 10 free days?  Pssst . . Guess what?  YOU DO!  If you are in SALES, you probably have DOUBLE THAT.

ACTIONABLE IDEA:

  1. Pick a SUBJECT
  2. Select 5 books
  3. DOWNLOAD those 5 audio books
  4. LISTEN during your commute.
  5. Do this for 1 MONTH.

This is a HUGE OPPORTUNITY.  This one IDEA will change the QUALITY of your thoughts.  Developing this HABIT will CHALLENGE the way you see the world.  This idea will IMPROVE the way you THINK.

You just PUNCHED average in the face.
